For those who don’t mind getting wet and muddy, this fascinating underground adventure will take you through a labyrinth of passages and chambers in which you will see stalactites, stalagmites, bats, spiders and rock formations known as “La Papaya.†You will also be able to see evidence that the caves were at one time at the bottom of the ocean. The caves are located only 45 minutes from La Fortuna.
We recommend bringing an extra set of dry clothes.

The Cano Negro Wildlife refuge is considered the best site on the continent for bird watching. In addition to an abundance of birds, Cano Negro is also home to many exciting animals, such as sloth’s, three types of monkeys, caimans, lizards, bats and a wide variety of flora native to the wetlands.
Our tour to this beautiful region leaves from La Fortuna and takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to get to Los Chiles, a small village just five kilometers from the Nicaraguan border. It is here where we start our boat trip to the wetlands. We will work our way slowly upstream, stopping along the way as we see different birds and animal species.
Around noon, we will stop along the river for a typical Costa Rican lunch before heading back to Los Chiles to take the bus back to La Fortuna.
